I am a mother of a high school senior and have been feeling the pressure of affording college. While I want to very best for my child's academic future, the reality is the costs have increased so dramatically that I find it difficult to believe that anyone can pay for it anymore. When I saw this book, I was so excited about their being an alternative to US colleges and universities. I have traveled abroad and my child at one point had considered attending some universities in the United Kingdom as she loves to travel and experience new things, but in reality, we didn't think college would be affordable. Then while touring US campuses, we learned that many schools offer "School Abroad" options. They said that it wouldn't even cost additional tuition fees as they would cover the education costs just as if the student were studying locally. My thought was that it was wonderful. Now I realize that it is a huge money-making scheme for American schools as tuition is much cheaper in Europe than what we pay here in the USA. I am so excited to have read about these over-seas options. What may have been impossible, now look possible.This book was very well put together. All of the schools listed are for international students and are all taught in English. I hadn't even realized that these existed. The author, Jennifer Viemont, did an amazing job at listing the different school and countries in order of costs, which I found extremely helpful. The book showed the differences between each school/country and how it would vary from a traditional American college or university. The experiences that would accompany getting your college degree in a foreign country sound amazing. While studying abroad may not be for everybody, I think this is an amazing opportunity that should be looked into by anyone wanting to further their education without ending up in so much debt that they will be paying for their degree for the next 30 years or more.
I am a mother of 2 who within the last 5 years graduated from college. I am currently paying my loans back from college and I have thought often about how to get rid of my college loan debt and the fear of my children having the same issue, even more so as prices increase. I had thought about trying overseas and loved to read about the comparison between college in the US versus Europe. For me I worried about not being near family and I can’t imagine my son or daughter being so far away from me, selfish I know. However, I really enjoyed reading the research on this book in case my children decide they would like to study abroad because Jennifer Viemont did a great job at compiling information. I did find it interesting that the numbers she provided the school even seemed low to me, my tuition was higher than she provided which made me upset about my choice in university . Her one statement is absolutely true, “willing to travel and step outside your comfort zone†then the option of education in Europe is an excellent alternative. I really did enjoy reading this book as someone who HATES her debt resulting from going to get her college degree within the states. As I said, it would be hard to be away from family but the numbers are pretty convincing. I would totally recommend getting this book! I would recommend it to both parents and students getting ready to look at colleges. It will offer choices for them and could be a way of realizing the actual costs of college. Read it! Enjoy it!
