About the Author
Ajanta Chakraborty was born in Bhopal, India, and moved to North America in 2001. She earned an MS in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia and a Senior Diploma in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance, to feed her spirit. Ajanta quit her corporate consulting job in 2011 and took the plunge to run Bollywood Groove full-time. The best part of her work day includes grooving with classes of children as they leap and swing and twirl to a Bollywood beat. Vivek Kumar was born in Mumbai, India, and moved to the US in 1998. Vivek has an MS in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas, Austin, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He has a very serious day job in management consulting. But he’d love to spend his days leaping and swinging, too. Our story We are co-founders of Bollywood Groove (bG), a Bollywood dance and fitness company for kids and adults. We started bG in 2008 in the Bay Area, California and then re-started it again in 2011 after we moved to Chicago. We barely knew a soul in Chicago but were overwhelmed by the warmth and support of our loving Chicago community who showed a very strong interest to learn about and experience Indian culture. We slowly built bG from 1 to 30+ classes per week. When we started our bG Kids! Program (ages 2-15) in 2011, we wanted our classes to be more than just dancing to popular Bollywood songs. We aspired to make our classes educational and to introduce our students to the rich and diverse culture of India in addition to learning a dance choreography. To this effect, we introduced CultureZOOM, an immersion into Indian culture, that is taught in each class via fun activities — storytelling, games, craft projects and mini-plays. CultureZOOM has been very well received! Kids (and even parents) are excited to learn more about India and its rich cultural heritage. Over the years we have refined our approach and continue to test the content in our classes. This book series is a way to share this content with a broader audience and we hope young readers will enjoy a glimpse into the beautiful cultural diversity that makes up India. In our spare time — who are we kidding? We have a two-year-old toddler. Dancing, running Bollywood Groove, writing books, and chasing our very rambunctious child is all that we can fit in a day!

This book was fun, engaging, and beautifully illustrated.
Let’s Celebrate Vaisakhi! is the latest Maya and Neel adventure, this time exploring a joyful spring harvest festival from the Punjab state in India. Fans of Maya and Neel won’t want to miss this latest adventure into the rich traditions of South Asian culture! Punjab, which borders Pakistan, is known for its large Sikh population, so Let’s Celebrate Vaisakhi! features a section on Sikhism as well as information about the food and dances associated with Vaisakhi. As always, the illustrations are so beautiful and engaging, and the wealth of information is presented in a way that is easily understood by young readers. I love how there is an emphasis on the natural world of the region and how it is showcased in the various aspects of the Vaisakhi festival.*I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes; however, all opinions are my own.*
Let’s celebrate vaisakhi is a great book to help bring children and adults into the festive spirit of Vaisakhi! This series is a beautifully illustrated and fun storyline of a pair of siblings that travel to different places and learn about local culture, food, and lanuguage. In this book the authors break down specific functions with sections called “info zoom†and “info recap†providing a very rich way of introducing new cultural items, customs, and phrases in a very digestible way. My sons who are 11 and 9 enjoyed the story and even Chintu the friendly squirrel who accompanies the pair on their journeys. This is a valuable book and series to help demystify cultural and traditional differences in a fun and delightful way! Highly recommended!
This is our new favorite bedtime book! My 6 year old son asks for it every night! We love learning about Vaisakhi and following Maya and Neel on their next adventure! It's so easy for kids to follow the fun story and they learn a ton about India. As a multi-cultural family based in LA we want our son to grow up learning about his Indian heritage too and this series really gets him excited about India! It also makes a perfect gift for his friends!
This entire series is amazing. These books teach my daughter (4 years old) about India and Indian culture. In fact when she visited India this year she was looking for Maya and Neel everywhere! And she had a very clearly planned out agenda based on the books. It was really cool. Keep up the good work guys! Looking for many more books to come.
Loved this next book in the series! My kids look forward to new books released by Vivek and Ajanta! We had a fun time reading.
Creatively written, appealing to children and adults like, beautiful illustrations that capture the imagination of children. We have a variety of books from these series and they are all great! The focus is culture and a sense of Indian pride. Since India is a so diverse as a country, as are these books that explore one tradition at a time and teach children about the Indian culture, heritage, food, outfits and much more. Highly recommend it!
