In an ancient time, a newlywed girl is taken to a seaside thatched cottage by her much older husband. His drunken lovemaking repels her, but Marnie must endure because he is the lord's middle son and she has married him to save her family from starvation. When he is killed in a fall, she feels more release than grief, in spite of the village rumors that she caused his death with a witch's curse. Suspicions grow when she befriends an outcast, a "mad" boy called Raver whose rages and yammerings look to villagers like the work of the devil. But Marnie realizes that the boy is deaf, and his bursts of anger come from his inability to communicate. With the help of the kindly and wise village priest, she begins to invent a sign language for him. A tender love grows between them in the cottage, but Marnie still fears the marriage bed. Meanwhile, the scandalized villagers spy on the "witch," and at last force her to endure the bloodcurdling ordeal of trial by hot iron. Marnie arrives in the village of Torcurra to live in a rundown and isolated cottage with her new husband, Isake Isherwood, the son of a nobleman. After a mere two days of marriage, Isake dies in a freak accident for which the villagers unfairly blame Marnie, whom they suspect is a witch. In this hostile environment the parish priest and an outcast boy Marnie dubs Raven are the young widow's only allies. She realizes that Raven is deaf rather thanAas the superstitious townsfolk believeApossessed by demons, and develops a sign language with which the two young people communicate (fueling suspicions of witchcraft). Jordan blends a zealous supporting cast with the flavor of Hawthorne with the societal forces of Hardy as she plays out Marnie's tortuous fate. A few elements may be familiar to adult readers (e.g., a mysterious hidden treasure), but Marnie's ordeal at the hands of witch-hunters and Raven's efforts to learn to communicate make for riveting reading. “It’s got nothing to do with devils! He can’t hear!”This is one of those books that sneaks up on you and honestly, I don’t understand why no one knows about this book! This is so underrated it’s criminal. It discusses what it means to be deaf, to look past each other’s differences and love them for them, and that no matter what happens, we can get stronger.Marnie marries Isake Isherwood, the son of the Lord her family is working the lands in exchange for food and a roof over their heads. Her mother and sisters cannot work and her brothers are too young, so she takes the reins. (And her mom is so ungrateful later on)Due to nasty rumors and constant abuse of authority, Isake must ask for her hand, and she quickly discovers he isn’t what she thought him to be. He lies about his lands, takes her to a dank cove where there is no bed, only straw, and he rapes her.It’s handled very well and is not tossed aside.When Isake dies in an accident, two older women overhear her distressed cries to the priest, Father Brannan, and rumors circulate about her murdering her husband.And brand her a witch.Add in a “mad boy” that latches onto her kindness, Father Brannan, a secret about what the house is worth, and you have yourself a very interesting story. Though short, it ties up all loose ends and left me satisfied with the outcome.I was in awe watching how Marnie came up with signs to communicate with Raven, who she realizes isn’t plagued by devils, but deaf. He’s been whipped, beaten, and mocked simply because he cannot speak and scares the villagers when he attempts to, for he cannot form words, merely sounds that sound “inhuman” to them.Marnie is afraid at first, but when she realizes what’s going on and how much he’s suffering, works to find a way to communicate with him, even when all seems impossible.All the characters were complex and each had their moments where I wanted to slap them-but they all made it out fine, thank goodness, because they also had plenty of moments where I sat there going LIVE please! Don’t die omg.I loved the romance. It bloomed naturally, it was so sweet, and was a stark contrast to everything Marnie endured in the beginning. The romance is honestly one of the strongest highlights.Highly recommended to all.

Bought this book two days ago and finished it in one night (granted, I stayed up till 6am, but I'm a night owl and started it around 3). As my favorite genre is mideval with a twist, I've got to say this is quite an amazing read. It starts off slow, but like most other reviews, it hooks you without you ever knowing at what part it did so. Interesting characters that are believable, though I would have liked more insight and devolopment, but that's coming from someone who reads series instead of novels most of the time. I'd very much recommend this to readers who are familiar with "Dragon's Bait" by Vivian Vande Velde.SPOILER~Y STUFF::One thing that would have been fun - if not a little cheesy - would be the fact that Raven ended up being the 'treasure' they were all looking for. If he ended up being the king's bastard-born son. Don't get me wrong, I really did like how it ended (her courage through the trial and the growth of their relationship is perfect and heartwretching) but I wish there was just one more good thing that happened to these characters that went through so much. But I guess that the lesson of the book was less of a 'be careful who you judge' and more of a 'don't put up with toxic people' morale. But, that might just be my mindset for strong leads after reading "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series right before this.

I read this for the first time when I was twelve. I sort of stumbled upon it at the bookstore, attracted more by the cover than anything else. The story is very lovely and gentle. It really touched me on a spiritual level, and it's a book I often find myself returning to. I don't want to spend a lot of time rehashing the plot, but I will say it's a story of struggle, ostracism, and the healing power of innocent love. I wish this book was available on kindle, as I have a degenerative eye disease that disables me from reading regular print books.To any parents who are concerned about the possible content of this story: there is a very brief, simple love scene and non-explicit mentions of sexual attraction between two characters. However, I will point out that, unlike many young adult books, it involves two people who are in love with each other and it plays an important role in the main character's struggle to allow herself to love physically.

I really enjoyed this book, nearly as much as Wolf Woman. Marnie's character is independent and fierce in what she believes in, despite what everyone else thinks of her. This is shown more and more as she takes Raven under wing and teaches him the ways of kindness he's never known before. Even with the whole village against them and being wrongfully accused of witchcraft, Marnie continues to fight for what she thinks is right, for herself and for Raven.The ending is bittersweet. Things worked out, but not in ways she planned and not perfectly. It makes the story that much more real, and ended on a hopeful note despite the loose ends. Sherryl Jordan leaves a few things to the imagination.
