About the Author

Matt Mattus is an American visual designer, artist, horticulturist, and futurist. He is also a third generation gardener of his family property in Massachusetts and the author of Mastering the Art of Vegetable Gardening. Matt’s popular gardening blog, Growing with Plants, has garnered recognition in leading lifestyle magazines and is frequently voted a top five gardening blog. It has won many national awards and nominations and has earned a loyal following of fans. He has served for three years as a trustee of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden (Boylston, MA), is Vice President of the 175-year-old Worcester County Horticultural Society, sits on the board of theTower Hill Botanic Garden as a trustee, and is also President of the prestigious North American Rock Garden Society. One copy is a gift for Chris, an astonishing amateur cook who dreams of growing vegetables beyond the ordinary; and another copy is for my own garden library, because do not the best gardening books encourage dreaming?Matt Mattus, the author/photographer of MASTERING THE ART OF VEGETABLE GARDENING, is a hip Renaissance guy: a gardener since he was five-years old, a passionate plantsman, an über designer, and an esteemed blogger who speaks to the dreamer in all of us. Full disclosure: He is also one of my precious go-to-horticultural gurus and the only person whom I will let prune my trees, albeit with me working alongside him.Matt is both a master gardener and that encouraging friendly neighbor who lives down the block and has been growing vegetables on the same land where his family has gardened for three generations. His mother kept detailed records of everything they canned (24 pints of grape jelly, 12 quarts of corn, 15 pints of bread-and-butter pickles, etc.); his father was an ingenious artist/gardener who might not have understood kiwis, but no worries, Matt encourages us to go beyond what has become familiar. Think Celtuce!Matt’s book will also tell you why and how to protect leek stalks from sunlight and which are the best varieties to buy, (‘spoiler,’ check out page 27). Or in one of those grey boxes, Matt gives you ‘Mastering Techniques’. He debunks gardening myths; he references back to antique volumes in his own garden library, not YouTube. Matt also reveals why cilantro always tastes like soap to me, and what to do about that. I just love all of his little entices, they get me thinking. I may not be a vegetable gardener but I do grow wild strawberries in containers and in one of the most persuasive photos Matt is showing a gorgeous bouquet of Belgian endive, forced in a pot.(You and your big ideas, dear Matt, just wonderful!)

Love, love, love this beautiful and oh so helpful book! It is a gorgeous, easy to understand guide for all things vegetable gardening. Can’t figure out why your carrots are splitting, the author walks you through several reasons and provides easy to follow suggestions. I have already bought two more for gifts. I can’t wait for spring to arrive so I can get outside and put all of his amazing knowledge to work.

Just received this much anticipated book. It’s beautifully done and well written as I expected it to be after following Matt’s blog for many years. Looking forward to studying it as I prepare for the upcoming spring. Hopefuly he will now do a flower gardening book as well.

Matt's book is fabulous! The photographs are terrific, and there's great information about all kinds of vegetables. Matt has tips for both new and experienced gardeners. I love the "mastering techniques" boxes with next-level growing information. Definitely a book to add to your collection that you'll return to time after time.

I don't grow vegetables. My friends and family do and I reap the rewards. NOW, after reading this, I want and NEED to grow vegetables. Matt's warm, funny, itelligent and easy-going way of writing doesn't make you scared of gardening. His passion is infectious and I'm now waiting for the ground to thaw. And...celtuce...I need to grow celtuce!

This is a wonderful book by my favorite blogger. Although I follow the author for his incredible plant knowledge and entertaining stories, I also enjoyed this book on vegetable gardening more than even I expected to. A fun read for vegetable gardeners or plant fanatics.

Mastering the Art of Vegetable Gardening is a comprehensive book that details everything you need to know about growing different veggies. An added bonus is the photography, which is just beautiful.In the introduction, Mattus is positively inspiring. I think he could actually motivate someone who had no intention of starting a vegetable garden!“What you grow is a personal choice. Be creative. Treat your vegetable garden as your own private fantasy supermarket. Make it the most amazing farming experience you can imagine. Grow things you can’t buy at any vegetable stand or find at any store. But also grow the things you use most or find yourself buying every week. Be inspired not to just sow something and let it grow, but to truly master growing it.”The book goes through every step in growing different vegetables. There is every vegetable I could think represented in this book, including kale, garlic, swiss chard, broccoli, okra, parsnips, carrots, beans, tomatoes and more. There are even some herbs included like parsley, dill and cilantro.Mattus holds your hand through growing each vegetable but not in an arrogant way. The treatment of each vegetable is extensive and very thorough, including varieties, raising from seeds, transplanting to the garden, pests/disease, staking and pruning, and pollinating. He talks about the best kind of containers to use when growing your seedlings and advises on temperatures for both seedlings and plants. Also, Mattus discusses fertilizer, watering and mulching.I am so glad I found this book because I want to start a vegetable garden this spring. And I found it at the perfect time since he recommends starting tomatoes by ordering seeds and seed trays in late winter, which it is now!

There is a lot of information in this book. As noted in the synopsis above, Mastering the Art of Vegetable Gardening is not an entry level book. It’s a book for someone who already has the basics down. It is, though just chock full of information about all manner of vegetables.There are lots of beautiful photos to make what is essentially a reference book a pleasant reading experience. The book goes in to a deep dive for each vegetable it profiles offering up all you need to know about the varieties and how to grow them.It’s not a book that you read cover to cover. It’s a book that you keep on hand to be there to answer your questions when you want to know something about say, planting cruciferous vegetables. It’s an excellent addition for every gardener’s library.I received a free copy for my honest review
