Peter Martell's wonderful book is many things at once. It is part True Crime thriller, part political call-to-arms, part personal journey, part history textbook that lets its subject speak for themselves. To balance these quarters in the space of some 300 pages is a singular achievement of craft, as much as of energy and research. I read the last 100 pages in a sitting, and now, several weeks later, I remain heartbroken, furious, fascinated, and hopeful about this unique corner of the world. If you have never read a page on Sudan, start here; if you think you know something of this story already, think again.
What a great book! Absolutely amazing. Peter Martell is a superb journalist with a keen eye for detail. Anyone interested at all in the region or just good writing for that matter would love this book.
Peter manages the near impossible with this book: an informative and deeply nuanced history of South Sudan that remains, above-all, tremendously entertaining and accessible. Having read much of the available literature on South Sudan, both in general and academic press, I can say that quite confidently that this book is one of the best out there on the topic. As a book for a reader who only knows about South Sudan what they remember from the headlines when the country gained independence in 2011, it fills in all the gaps and brings you up to speed on the region and the seemingly intractable conflict thats rocked it since the 1950s. And it does so, not with dry chronologies but personal accounts from Peter's years as a correspondent on the ground -- from rumbling through the jungle to meet with Joseph Kony to tours of torture chambers and swims through the Nile. But the book is also incredibly informative for even seasoned South Sudan history buffs, as Peter finds a way to write human accounts of pivotal moments in South Sudan's history. All those lines in academic texts and journals that we take for granted ("the rebels received support from the Israelis", "Britain decided to keep Sudan together at independence) come alive when Peter tracks down the people who were there --- the last of the colonial era District Commissioners and what they had hoped for the fledgling country in 1955 or the Israeli intelligence operative that trained the rag tag Anyanya forces in the 1970s --- to see how a nation was built. Can't recommend this enough. Whether you only have a passing interest in African history or have staked a career on it, First Raise a Flag is a brilliant read.
A TREMENDOUS BOOK! Full of sumptuous prose and nuanced descriptions. Martell manages to narrate the epic, sweeping story of a nation as well as he depicts intimate portraits of the individuals that fought alongside it. He takes on the mantle of history humbly, and conveys deep respect for the lives of the people he documents. It reminds me of work by Ryszard Kapuscinski — essential as a history, but as well written as a novel.
Peter Martell has crafted a book that captures both the generational trauma and historic violence that are at the root of South Sudanese identity, and the current dynamics at play. His experience, gained over years of living in and reporting on the country, is invaluable. Mixing strong analysis and empathetic storytelling this ambitious book takes a complicated history and makes it all feel very, very alive.
This is The Must Read Book on South Sudan -- written by a true expert, long-term observer of the country, this is a readable, thoughtful account. Highly recommend.
An entertaining, informative read about a little known conflict in the world's youngest nation that many, many countries have had a hand in creating and breaking.
