I have seen many books by great players and teachers with mistakes This is a great book period!!! Hold on to it for years and you will see the huge amount of info contained, and also the quality of paper , just a beautiful book!!! Not by any means the only book you will need, but who cares? Tell me any people on here that have only 1 guitar book, bet not many if any. But i will say if I had only 1, it would be this 1!!!
I started lessons two years ago as a beginner with an acoustic guitar. I had never previously had any exposure to musical instruments. I get 30 minutes a week with my teacher (who is fabulous) but he throws a lot of information at me and I don't always immediately grasp what he is saying or demonstrating. This book has been a godsend in that it very comprehensive and explains chords, scales, and music theory concepts in an easy to understand manner. The illustrations are clear and extremely helpful. I find that I use the manual constantly to reinforce or clarify my learning and it has - along with a lot of practice! - helped me steadily progress as an aspiring musician. If you are already an accomplished player, you may find this to be redundant of what you know, but for me it has been extremely helpful.
This is a fantastic overview of the guitar. It's perfect if you already have a background in music, and want to know more about the guitar. It doesn't talk down to the reader, nor does it start with lame beginner exercises. It gives a very self motivated reader enough information to teach themselves what they need to know about guitar, including history and styles.
This book is one of my favorite books, and I take it with me everywhere. I read it when I'm on break at my work, and when I'm just sitting around at home. It is very easy to understand, and contains every bit of knowledge I could ever ask for. Some of the topics included are:History of the guitarBiographies of famous/influential guitaristsHow guitars are made/how they workMusic theory and how it applies to guitar playingBasic skillsIntermediate and advanced techniques for different music stylesI would definitely buy this again.
I've owned at least four copies of this book over the last 25+ years and am about to order a fifth. It's so good and useful that I keep giving away copies to other guitarists. Even though it is a veritable mini-encyclopedia of all things guitar, it's not perfect. It includes some things that I wouldn't and leaves out others that I would like to see included but I know of no other guitar book that covers so much information in one package. You could buy four other guitar books and still come up short of what you'd get here. I can't say that this is the ONLY guitar book you'll ever need. There is no such book. What I can say is that you'll find yourself referring to this book again and again for many years to come.
If you play guitar for fun or are a serious student you simply have to get a copy of this book. This handbook sets the standard for all other guitar books and instruction. Encyclopedic in the information it contains. Denyer's handbook was recommended to me by a professional guitar player, a 60+ year guitar player and two guitar instructors.
A friend of mine picked this book up out of his local library in 1992 and we spent the next decade swapping it back and forth. Needless to say, his copy is now almost three decades overdue. Nonetheless, they aren’t getting it back, and since I don’t see him very often anymore I needed to source my own copy. Since I couldn’t find one of my own to steal from a library I went to Amazon and found it for a price that turned out to be a steal.Everything I know about music theory and modal playing is contained within this book. This book also introduced me to the legendary Robert Fripp and drove me to purchase King Crimson’s music, a gift I can never be thankful enough for.Get this book. It is amazing and you can own it for the cost of two issues of any guitar magazine currently in production.
This was highly recommended by several proficient guitarists as a valuable resource for knowing your instrument. It has been very helpful to me and I am able to maintain and setup my own guitars now with the additional help of Guitar Player Repair Guide. The Handbook contains history and theory and a great collection of chords and...well, it's a Handbook. Available at bargain prices used right here on Amazon.
The best book on guitar basics I've ever had. I got this book 30 years ago and it has been my first resource for anything guitar for three decades. When I lost this book, I immediately ordered another. I would hate to be without it. It covers the basics of guitar construction, history, chords, scales, recording and more. It is a solid starting point for almost any question one might have about guitar, from playing to repairing, from tradition to modernity. Great book.
