Review

“[A] rigorous yet surprisingly accessible explanation of how AI actually works, coupled with a keen interrogation of its strengths and weaknesses...As an explainer, AIQ is impeccable, brilliantly making a complicated subject understandable. And while it offers a glowing picture of how AI can get things right, it also clearly lays out how things can go wrong.” ―Strategy + Business "Entertaining and persuasive. The book’s goal is to explain how artificial intelligence delivers its incredible results, and Polson and Scott are like a pair of excitable mechanics lifting up the bonnet of a sports car. This is a passionate book, and it is a model of how to make data science accessible and exciting." ―The Sunday Times (UK)"Grounding AI in tried-and-true methods makes it seem less alien: Computers are simply faster ways to solve familiar problems. Hence the book’s title, a portmanteau of AI and IQ--the point being that we need both." ―Wall Street Journal"Nick Polson and James Scott take us under the hood of AI and data science, showing that behind most algorithms is the story of a person trying to solve a problem and make the world better. The result is an engaging, optimistic vision of an age in which computers have become a pervasive, influential presence in every aspect of life." ―Michael J. Casey, senior advisor at MIT Media Lab's Digital Currency Initiative, and co-author of The Truth Machine"At last, a book on the ideas behind AI and data science by people who really understand data. Cutting through the usual journalistic puff and myths, they clearly explain the underlying ideas behind the way that loads of data are being harnessed to build the algorithms that can carry out such extraordinary feats. But they are also clear about the limitations and potential risks of these algorithms, and the need for society to scrutinise and even regulate their use. A real page-turner, with fine stories and just enough detail: I learned a lot." ―David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk, University of Cambridge

According to the title, the book is about AI...but it's about almost anything but AI. Yeah, it's a lot of interesting information, but it really is just dragging. I wanted to learn something about AI not all those other things. It's a downer. I still have a bit more to read, but i'm not so optimistic..

This book is excellent! In a very easy to absorb fashion, the book describes how artificial intelligence is used in our daily lives and what are the current limitations. It demystifies the term and makes it more concrete by explaining the algorithms and methodologies used by the modern AI systems. Most importantly this book shows that by knowing some basic math concepts one can come up with new applications of the AI algorithms. It reinsures that AI can be understood and applied by almost anyone. This book is great for anyone who is generally interested in the topic as well as for scientist, engineers, or businessmen who are interested in applying AI techniques in their work .

Outstanding prescient book on current endeavors in the AI space, how it is being harness by humans (the IQ component), and forward thinking in how policy direction may play a role. A touch of math, but just enough for context. Very good for those who have business interests in this space.

Reviewed and recommended by the Wall Street Journal. Quite simply, a very readable and enjoyable book about AI. It makes the highly complicated math concepts behind AI accessible for any level reader. Each chapter also provides an interesting historical bio too. Finally, you will be able to provide interesting insights in your next conversations about AI and machine learning.

I bought a first copy followed by six additional copies and sent them to friends that I believed would benefit from the book. This is a great intro for anyone with an interest in the effect that Artificial Intelligence will have in particular on improvements in Healthcare Systems.

Great book, well written and explains how current AI works and what the societal issues are likely to be. It is done in a way that most educated people should find to be clear and sensible. The authors' goal is to give readers a background to be able to form intelligent views ot what the promise and potential problems of AI are. I think they have largely succeeded.

Artificial Intelligence has a broad spectrum. It starts with electro-mechanical thermostats that “know” how to regulate temperatures and ends with the “Turing Test” postulating that the best test of whether a machine is intelligent is whether it can communicate as if it were a human being. So far, no computer program has ever passed the Turing Test --- nor, is it said, can half the real human beings on the planet!Authors Nick Polson and James Scott promise “a practical outlook on the emergence of AI” across its spectrum from two perspectives:The first 5% of the book is an interesting recap of high-level AI topics. It stresses the limits of machine intelligence vs. human brain intelligence:=====An autonomous car can drive you to the soccer field, but it can’t even referee the match, much less decide on its own to tie you to the goalposts and kick the ball at your sensitive bits.=====They address economic, political, and ethical issues of AI such as:MALEVOLENCE – will cyborgs imprison us in “The Matrix?”JOBLESS FUTURE – will robots put human beings out of their jobs? (This concept harkens back to the wonderful Twilight Zone 1964 episode "The Brain Center at Whipple's" where “A heartless CEO completely automates his factory and lays off almost all his workers over the objections of his employees.”) Will we need a Universal Basic Income to help people cope in a world where automation eliminates unemployment?MARKET DOMINANCE – will artificial intelligence, operating on “big data,” allow a few companies like Amazon and Facebook to monopolize the economic and information aspects of our world? The authors think that while these are valid concerns, there are also counter-trends that will alleviate them, and that anyway, human-like machine intelligence (self-aware machines with a conscience, or, worse, self-aware machines without one) will not be here for a long time, if ever:=====To focus on this possibility now is analogous to the de Havilland Aircraft Company, having flown the first commercial jetliner in 1952, worrying about the implications of warp-speed travel to distant galaxies.=====This is also my feeling. IMO human consciousness takes place at a molecular level that may never be well enough understood to duplicate with inanimate circuits. I would be more worried about the consequences of amplifying our biological intelligence by modifying our genome to produce larger and more complex brains than nature allows, than by duplicating it in inanimate machines. The authors manifest a reassuring humility in letting us know that they do not pretend to have all the answers:=====These questions are deeply important, and we hear them discussed all the time— at tech conferences, in the pages of the world’s major newspapers, and over lunch among our colleagues. We should let you know up front that you won’t find the answers to these questions in our book, because we don’t know them. Like our students, we are ultimately optimistic about the future of AI, and we hope that by the end of the book, you will share that optimism.=====That optimistic note sets the tone for the remaining 95%, which is a well-written data analysis manual, with plenty of excellent anecdotes, that business people (i.e. non-mathematicians) will find interesting. It explains how cutting-edge companies like Netflix and Amazon develop algorithms that analyze data to evaluate proposed new ventures with a high rate of predictive success without spending inordinate amounts of time and money on pilot programs. The case studies are wide-ranging, from the seminal data analysis done to analyze aircraft losses in WWII to analysis baseball statistics today, and everything in between. The authors warn of the perils of data analysis, such as assuming your data is more accurate than it is, not knowing the scope of incomplete data, and relying on data as a “crutch” that you hope will get you past your own shortcomings in judgement and experience. (In that regard I am reminded of the over-reliance on “big data” by Mitt Romney in 2012 and Ms. Clinton in 2016. The candidates and their campaigns flopped).I enjoyed the author's high-level takes on AI in the first 5% of the books and wish they could have stretched that part of the book out more. Being an old IT data analysis hand, I’d already heard of many of their statistical analysis case studies. But I think a business person will enjoy them, and understanding how "data people" see the world and using them effectively to analyze information.

An excellent introduction for anyone who wants to learn about artificial intelligence. It's an uplifting, realistic, and often funny account.
