Ann Rule has written a very comprehensive story of Gary Ridgeway's reign of terror through the suburbs of Seattle, Washington. I rate the book five stars for her thorough coverage, but my interest level was at the four star level. The first section summarizes each victim's history leading up to their leaving home to find excitement in the Pacific northwest, and for the most part, ending up as prostitutes. Various individuals were suspected as being the "Green River Killer", and the book delves into the childhood history of Gary Ridgeway who was a bed wetter into his teens with his mother washing his genital area trying to break him of the habit. His three marriages were difficult and he developed what he called a hatred of prostitutes. He looked upon each of them as mere garbage to be thrown away while each of them had loved ones living somewhere in the country who was concerned about them. The book is over 400 pages long, and you may feel as though you are being told more than you care to know about the subject. The subject is depressing, but it is an extremely well done book and well worth your time.
I love many of Ann Rule's books, especially the ones that focus on a single serial killer. This one and "Stranger Beside Me" are two of her best, imo. She researches and writes about not only the killer, but also about the victims and the law officers who bring them to justice. You feel as though you know all of them after you've read the book. As with this book, sometimes her titles are a bit sensational-sounding, but her writing style is not that way at all. She doesn't sugar coat what is done to the victims, but her books don't focus on gore. They delve much deeper into the people and their lives. The GRK usually chose young street people and prostitutes for his victims, but this book makes you see them as real people, not stereotypes. You might have a different view after reading this book. This was a tough case that took many years to solve. It's hard to believe people like this killer exist, but they do. I'm glad someone has exposed such people and what it takes to stop them.
As with all of this Author's books, "Green River, Running Red" is an excellent read. This particular book, as with other books written by this Author, delves into the dark psychological mind of a serial killer, "The Green River Killer." This book is a true account of an actual serial killer who terrorized and murdered young women in the State of Washington for well over a decade. How was the Green River killer able to elude police capture for so long? Who were his victims and how did they so easily fall pray to this madman? Who was this killer and what did he look like? How did the Green River killer chose his victims and, most importantly, 'why' did he chose to kill them? This book provides physiological insight, and answers, to many of these questions. It goes into depth concerning the police investigations, including how and why the Green River killer was able to elude capture for so many years. It gives the reader an in-depth look at the victims themselves, putting real-live human faces to the young women who fell pray, so easily, to the killer. It also provides the reader a look into the lives of these young women and provides insight into the various reasons they chose the lifestyle of prostitution.I highly recommend this read to anyone who is interested in true-life crime stories, especially physiologists, law enforcement officers, and criminologists, who are actively evolved in the psychological study and/or apprehension of serial killers. This book will provide you insight, including 'lessons-learned' when it comes to profiling and apprehending killers such as the Green River killer.Actual photos of many of the victims, including the killer himself, are included in this book.
No one comes close to Ann Rule for true crime! The fact that she was literally and figuratively close to the investigation gave her deeper insight into these horrific crimes. She knew the area and in fact lived near one of the body dump sites, and her knowledge of the area comes through in her descriptions of the area and the investigators. She was peripherally involved in the investigation and even received some of the many tips called in. Rule interviewed the victims' families and her empathy for them comes through. Though the victims were prostitutes, many were very young, some had children, most of their stories were devastatingly sad. Rule makes you root for the beleagured investigators who she knew on a personal level. This is a terrible story about a monster, and Rule makes in heartbreakingly real.
Reading true crime books are tough. I despise the killers and grieve for the dead. This book focuses on Gary Ridgeway, a despicable weak man who murdered 49 women and perhaps more. Ridgeway hid in plain sight. It took years to capture the Green River killer in 2001.The book is long. 653 pages. The author gives details to help the reader see that these women were real people and not names. Ridgeway is a monster. He is truly evil. I was surprised that his name doesn't appear until probably 400 pages in. This was intentional but not needed. Anyone familiar with the Green River killer knows Ridgeway. He is trash.I pray Ridgeway repents. I pray he turns from his sins to Christ who is able to save him. He saved me and I'm a sinner too.
