This is a good prep book. The difficulty and structure of the material in the new exam definitely reflects the material in the redesigned exam. Compared to other books, the questions seem better constructed and lot more similar to the actual test. Some of the material have been in previous editions, but the structure and the format have been properly modified. Look forward to using it with my students.
Barron's is the best review book. This was updated for the 2017-18 test, but not the newest one. Wait to get it - who knows if there will be an SHSAT next year!
The book has no poetry practice
I bought the book believing it would be updated to reflect the newest changes in the SHSAT. While it has changed the number of grammar from 20 to 10 it does not include any poetry (a problem area for many students) and all the reading passages (maybe save 1 or 2) are the same as in previous editions. I would not buy if you own previous editions.
Given that the SHSAT has changed in the last two years, Barron's SHSAT 5th Edition is a great resource for prep. The practice/review section—"Test-Taking Strategies"—is very helpful with clear rules and tips, and my students are capable of learning independently as a result. In fact, the explanation takes on a voice that seems "like someone is talking to me", according to one student. It's more engaging to the reader than other textbooks are.As far as I'm concerned, this edition covers all the skills necessary for my students to perform well on the SHSAT. Great resource!
I recommend this test book for both teachers/tutors and students studying individually. The "Skillbuilder" sections are crammed with clear and thorough techniques, examples, and explanations of what to expect on the exam. It does an excellent job of addressing the grammar you are most likely to encounter. This book very helpful whether you are spending an entire summer preparing for the exam or an entire evening.
I would not recommend buying this prep book. It seems like Barron's did not get the update about the changes for the upcoming SHSAT, such as the inclusion of fiction passages and poetry and the reduction of revising/editing problems from 20 to 9-11. This book would have been more useful if it came out last year, but it seems Barron's is a year behind with the SHSAT. The format of the practice tests in this book are not representative of what students might face on the actual exam.
I just purchased the 5th edition after buying the 4th edition one month ago. It looks like this latest edition follows the new test. The chapters are easy to follow. Hopefully my son will use this book to prepare for the test in October. Overall, I a very happy I found the 5th edition. Now, for the hard part...convincing my son to actually do the work.
